No! It's not all in the eye of the beholder! The very fact that you see good in things and evil means there's a standard of good and evil! That means there is an objective standard. When you say it is "unfair" that you gave your friend a pencil and he didn't lend one back to you means there is some standard you are measuring up to!

Why are some standards objective? Because they are generally exhibited as imprinted on the human heart! Most societies have found it foul to murder innocent life for the sake of murdering innocent life. That's believed to be an objective standard.

We're told to be unselfish for the sake of society. But isn't the society "others." So basically you're saying "be unselfish to help others." Or "think of others to think of others." But why should we give a hoot about others? "Because we should," we're told. Where does that standard come from? Not from cultural differences. That standard is imprinted in our hearts! In this case the eye of the beholder generally sees the same thing. So it seems that the eye has a certain way of looking at things!

Interesting, interesting. (All this stuff is coming from Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. A good read so far.)

i'll argue against you to see where we can get. the standards that we compare things to are different for all kinds of people. everyone has different standards. but i do agree that there is one true standard that we should all try to find to base our decisions of right and wrong off of. but not everyone has found this yet so there are still many people out there that base there decisions of false precepts. i will post the second part of this thought today and see what kind of reponses i get from that. thanks for your input and please keep this conversation going, the more we discuss the more we will uncover.

As humans, we see that different cultures believe in somewhat different standards, yet some standards are very similar. And for those standards which are different, we believe that one standard is closer to a true standard than the other. What does this mean though? This means in our hearts we recognize that there is a true standard to reach.

agreed. there is one true standard out there, but there are many other standards as well. sometimes we must dig deep to find the true standard. it is hard because everything can look good at some standard or level. but we must dig deep to determine what is good on all levels because only that is truly good. thank you again cj.
